A resolution adopted by the United Nations Security Council on 23 December 2016, by a vote of 14 For, 0 Against, 1 Abstaining (United States). The resolution reaffirmed the illegality of Israeli settlement activities in the West Bank and East Jerusalem under international law, stating that continued construction and expansion of settlements constitute a significant risk for the viability of the two-state solution. It called on Israel to take steps to halt and reverse these activities, and on member states to distinguish between Israel and the territories occupied in 1967. It also urged the resumption of peace talks based among other things on the Arab Peace Initiative and the Road Map for Peace. The resolution was notable for the outgoing Obama administration's decision not to use the United States' veto power, while it was strongly condemned and rejected by Israel, as well as US President-elect Donald Trump.
