ICJ Advisory Opinion on the Separation Barrier (2004)
An advisory opinion compiled by the International Court of Justice at the request of the UN General Assembly that was published on 9 July 2004. The opinion concerned the status of the West Bank Separation Barrier under international law. The majority of the court's membership found that Israel was in violation of international humanitarian and other law, and that self-defense did not justify the construction of the barrier on the approved route. It called on Israel to cease construction of the barrier on Palestinian territory, dismantle sections that had been built and compensate Palestinians who had been damaged by the construction. American judge Thomas Buergenthal dissented from the court's decision to hear the case, claiming that it did not take all relevant information into account.
