A statement published by the Middle East Quartet on 23 October 2015 in Vienna, Austria, following a meeting between United Nations Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process Nickolay Mladenov (representing UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon), Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, US Secretary of State John Kerry and EU High Representative Federica Mogherini. The leaders expressed concern over escalating Israeli-Palestinian violence, encouraged Israeli-Jordanian cooperation in maintaining the status quo at the holy sites in Jerusalem, recognizing Jordan's "special role" as defined in the Israel-Jordan Peace Treaty, and called for steps to be taken to increase confidence in the viability of a two-state solution.
