Balfour Declaration (1917)
A letter authored by the British Foreign Minister, Lord Arthur James Balfour, on 2 November 1917, and subsequently endorsed by the British cabinet. It is primarily a declaration of Britain's support for the establishment of a “national home” for the Jewish people in Palestine without prejudice to the rights of other communities, or the rights and political status of Jews outside Palestine. The letter was addressed to Lord Lionel Walter Rothschild, who was requested to transmit it to the World Zionist Organization. It was later referenced during the 1920 San Remo Conference, and served as a basis for the 1922 League of Nations Mandate for Palestine.
