Operation Litani (1978)

An Israeli military operation conducted 14-21 March 1978. Israeli forces quickly overran southern Lebanon, with the goal of eliminating PLO presence south of the Litani River and preventing attacks against Israeli civilians. On 19 March, the UN Security Council adopted Resolution 425, calling for a ceasefire and the withdrawal of Israeli forces from Lebanon. Israel completed its withdrawal in June, while the newly created UNIFIL and Christian militias allied with Israel, which later formed the South Lebanon Army, deployed in the area.
