An exchange of letters between PLO Chairman Yasser Arafat and Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin that took place on 9 September 1993, a few days before the signing of the Declaration of Principles, the first major agreement concluded as part of the Oslo Process. In the exchange, Arafat proclaimed that the PLO "recognizes the right of the State of Israel to exist in peace and security", accepts UNSC Resolutions 242 and 338, commits to the peace process and renounces violence. The letter also affirmed the invalidity of clauses in the Palestinian National Covenant that run contrary to the its contents, a declaration later endorsed by the Palestinian National Council. Rabin's brief letter confirms Israel's recognition of the PLO as "the representative of the Palestinian people" and willingness to enter negotiations with it.
