Operation Summer Rains (2006)

An Israeli military operation in the Gaza Strip, the first since the implementation of the Disengagement Plan, which followed a period of sustained rocket fire from the Strip on localities in southern Israel. The immediate trigger for the operation was an attack by Hamas on an IDF patrol on 28 June 2006 that resulted in the deaths of two soldiers and the abduction of Cpl. Gilad Shalit. Along side operations in Gaza, the IDF arrested several Hamas operatives in the West Bank, including ministers and members of the Palestinian Legislative Council. The operation was soon overshadowed by the 2006 Lebanon War, but combat operations in Gaza continued until Israel and PNA President Mahmoud Abbas agreed on a ceasefire in November 2006.
